People might say that there hasn't been much to laugh about just recently, but the antidote to the credit crunch, rising prices and a rainy summer has been found. It's Instant Wit. The latest fundraiser for ACT (Arts and Community in Thornbury) was an hilarious evening at Turnberries on Saturday 19th July when the Instant Wit team treated a packed audience to more than a laugh a minute. If you ever saw TV's 'Who's Line is it Anyway?' you would have a good idea of the kind of entertainment served. For those who haven't, the format is for combinations of locations, objects, situations and characters to be suggested by the audience and the actors improvise a comedy scene. So there's no script, the actors don't know what's coming, and yet the Instant Wit team demonstrated their extraordinary quickness of thought, natural comedy talent and all round entertainer abilities to provide a top class evening of fun. Chris Grimes was a practiced master at engaging the audience and his partners, Steph Weston and Peta Dennis were quicksilver in picking up the threads and building very funny scenes from next to nothing. In a show that made me laugh from start to finish it is difficult to pick out highlights, but the improvised songs and music were brilliant. An eastern European folk song being made up on the spot and an opera in a morgue will make me smile for some time to come. Peta Dennis is an entertainer who learned her skills in Thornbury. When we see what can be achieved with the right start, the ACT goal of a purpose built theatre in Thornbury becomes all the more attractive. It's not often one can recommend a form of entertainment that can cheer anyone aged from 14 to 104, but Instant Wit is just that. They can be contacted on 0117 9745734 or via www.instantwit.co.uk. Go on, cheer yourself up; we certainly did. Tony Domaille |
