![]() The weather was kind to all the players who took part in the ACT (Arts and Community in Thornbury) Charity Golf Day on Wednesday 11 June. A grand total of 24 teams took part and as well as team prizes there was the individual prize of The Golden Gromit, made specially by Aardman Animations for ACT, to help in furthering the Charity's aim to build a performance venue in Thornbury . An extra zest was added to the day by a Hole In One competition, sponsored by Berkeley Vale Motors, with a brand new car as the main prize on hole 2 and other great prizes for all of the other Par Threes. Team winners were 'The ReACTor Lads' (Neil Denton, John Denton, Rocky Brian and Steve Cooley) with 102 points. In second place was 'The Wiggly Worms' and third place Alexandra Workwear. There were also prizes for 'Nearest the Pin' and 'Nearest the Line'. The rare Golden Gromit itself went to Chris Roberts from the 'Wiggly Worms' team with 40 points. Chris came in as a substitute at the eleventh hour and snatched victory over Thornbury Men's captain Jon Barton with a monster 20 foot putt on the 18th hole! An auction for a flag from the 2008 Masters Tournament signed by Nick Faldo, a visor signed by Darren Clarke and a day out at Ogbourne Down Golf Club raised a further £365 for the ACT funds. The Aardman connection continued when Bob Baker, who co-writes Wallace and Gromit with Nick Park and also writes for Dr Who and invented the character K9, presented the prizes. A Grand Day Out indeed, with proceeds of more than £2000 going to the ACT charity and the organisers expressing their sincere thanks to all who took part, plus all the local businesses who supported this wonderful event so generously.
